The Kardashians, also known as the pop culture queens of 2016. Their drama always reaches our eyes in the matter of minutes, their trends immediately sweep the nation, and their problematic ways never fails to disappoint their ‘woke’ fans. Kim Kardashian however, seems to be changing for the best as she slowly but surely becomes an intersectional feminist, touching upon issues you’d never expect from this selfie queen.
1. Black Lives Matter
This year has been the year of tragedy, as many innocent black lives have been lost at the hand of police brutality. The argument of black lives versus all lives has hit the twittersphere hard, many celebrities have chosen the all lives matter path and have welcomed looking ignorant and uneducated. Since the Kardashian’s normally always ended up on that road, it came to the surprise to many when Kim Kardashian spoke out on why Black Lives Matter, even writing an essay and releasing it on her website. Her essay, addressing not only the lives that were lost but also acknowledging the immediate and pertinent need for change in the judicial system. My favorite line being “Hashtags are not enough. This must end now.” Using her platform to discuss such an important issue and also helping raise money for the families made a huge impact on the cause.
2. Gun Control
A very debated topic in the past few years, gun control has been very troubling and has different from everyone. Many stand with the constitution, speaking on their right to bear arms, even though they see all the innocent lives dying because of this sub par system. Kim, agreeing with gun control tweets about how sad the fact that the senate voted against background checks is. Mentioning also that the exact people that they are trying to protect our country from are the people they are making buying guns easier for. Rather than being pro gun, she exclaims her concern with the government not trying to prevent future accidents.
So sad! The senate voted against background checks being needed to buy guns. So terrorists on fbi’s wanted lists can legally still buy guns

3. LGBTQ+
This is a topic the Kardashians have never truly had a problem with, as they have always been supportive of the LGBTQ+ community. Kim has always expressed her love and support for the community, in a blog post she showed her appreciation for Obama by saying “We’ve never had a president so supportive of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and today I am proud to be an American!! I’m so happy that our country is making history and moving forward.” Not only does she constantly show love, but she also shows a bunch of love to Caitlyn Jenner, being her most supportive daughter.
4. Slut Shaming
Always being the victim of constant slut shaming, this was the year Kim addressed it. Her sex tape scandal many years back is still always brought back and mentioned to her and she finally had enough. So called feminist, Chloe G Mortez scolded Kim Kardashian when she posted a nude selfie on twitter, claiming that Kim was teaching young women that we only have our bodies to give, which was truly not the purpose for the picture as it was simply a picture. Kim Kardashian then snapped back at Chloe, and later writing an essay basically saying she’s fed up with being body shamed. Her essay quoting “I lived through the embarrassment and fear, and decided to say who cares, do better, move on. I shouldn’t have to constantly be on the defense, listing off my accomplishments just to prove that I am more than something that happened 13 years ago,” . She deserves to love herself just like every other woman, and there is nothing wrong with body positivity.
Although Kim Kardashian was once very problematic, and is maybe taken less seriously because of that, people need to understand that everyone deserves a second chance and also that everyone is problematic, even if it is unintentional. Kim is slowly turning a new leaf and is using her huge social media platform to not only serve incredible looks but also educate those that need to be educated. Hopefully, she will continue on this path and continue spreading positive messages.
