Self confidence is something that many young ladies, such as myself, struggle with on a world wide spectrum. With media exploiting certain looks and trends that not everyone can achieve, it becomes overwhelming to keep up with being “beautiful.” Now I’m not saying that these trends like makeup, plastic surgery, and self transformation are bad. I’m saying that the desire to keep up with these trends should be a want, not a must to feel beautiful, or even average. Living in a world where women struggle everyday to feel secure is something that I couldn’t bear to watch, that is why I, as a model, try my best to model 100% make up free.
My name is Bree and I’ve been freelance modeling for about 2 years now with a few offers from agencies that will remain nameless for security purposes. Ever since I was a little girl, the influences around me encouraged me to never have to feel like make up was a necessity,of course if you like wearing make-up, you’re allowed to do so. Beautiful and powerful women like, Angela Davis, and Minnie Riperton, who never let society suppress them in any area of their lives, let alone just physical expectations. Now I’m not saying that wearing make up is a sign of insecurity or a bad thing,
What I’m saying is that feeling like makeup is an everyday necessity shouldn’t be the kind of message that our young ladies are getting today.
Being able to not wear make-up I understand is a privilege due to the fact that light skin woman don’t suffer as much with skin conditions such as hyper pigmentation. What I’m saying is I want woman to no longer feel insecure without make up because society expects them to wear it. I want people to not feel like they need it, cause we don’t need it. I know many people have heard someone tell them “you look tired” when you weren’t wearing make up. It seems like for woman wearing make up is a way to be “polite” or the social norm, it’s expected of us.
That is why I decided about a year ago to model as naturally as possible in every photo shoot or runway show. Being able to model completely natural gave me a sense of self assurance, and the goal was to give young women every where the same feeling.
Seeing someone who looks just like you, with the same acne, or freckles, with the same insecurities and exploit them may give someone the encouragement they need to break free from their own personal insecurities.
Often times when I model without makeup, the photographers are usually all for it, saying “this natural look is really making a big impact in today’s media.” I love the support from not only girls who may feel the same way, but also from those who capture the images to spread the message.
Modeling isn’t just getting up in front of a camera and posing, it’s telling a story, and spreading a message, it’s influencing those eyes you capture with whatever you want them to feel. Modeling isn’t just some pretty face on a nice body, it’s a relationship between the viewer and the model herself. I want to ignite a feeling and intuition when somebody sees me in pictures, and to leave them with the same feeling I had when i posed for the shot. The message behind my modeling without makeup is simply this; you are beautiful because you are, don’t make yourself feel like you have to change to be beautiful.
