It’s Ok To Not Be With Your Toxic Family On Thanksgiving

Country Living

As the holidays roll around at this petty pace we scramble to make plans with family members or friends because of the obligation which is tradition. I am blessed to have an open-minded and caring family but sometimes your family members can really take a toll on your holiday spirit. Dreading the day you have to act like you have your whole life together and that your GPA is through the roof and you’ll still be able to eat without having to take home the leftovers. Preparing yourself not to snap at every negative comment they make. Which takes me to my point: it’s ok not to go home for the holidays.

Sometimes you just need to put yourself first and if going home for the holidays doesn’t make you happy, then don’t. If you have a mental illness it’s also ok to miss the holidays to take care of yourself instead of putting on a show that your fine for your family. Also, if you don’t feel like taking those negative comments from a relative or you would rather not argue over politics with your conservative relatives it’s better to stay home instead of getting angry and not be able to enjoy some really good food. If you do muster up the courage to go to your relative’s house for the holidays, stay strong and (as long as it’s a safe space) don’t compromise your thoughts to get through a nice meal.

Enjoy the holidays, through all the everyday routine that we all go through it’s nice to have a day to (hopefully) relax and spend time with people who are closest to you, whether that be your family or friends or maybe just yourself. Do whatever you need to do to enjoy this holiday. You deserve it!
