Meet Senator Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), Trump’s hand-picked nominee for the 84th U.S. Attorney General. After being one of the first members of Congress to openly endorse Trump early last year, he has played a major role in the decisions and policies Trump set forth throughout his campaign. So much so, he had influence on Trump’s immigration policy, the national advisory security committee, and even advising him on who he should choose for Vice President. Therefore, it wasn’t long before Sessions was offered the nomination.
A few weeks before the swearing in ceremony, Trump’s transition team issued this statement, “The President-elect has been unbelievably impressed with Sessions and his phenomenal record as Alabama’s attorney general and U.S. attorney”
Let’s take a look at said phenomenal record, shall we?
In 1986, Sessions was rejected from the position of a federal judge by a Senate committee after accusations arose suggesting that Sessions is racist. Former colleagues of his testified that Sessions would often use the n-word and commonly joked about the Ku Klux Klan, saying he had no problem with them until he learned they smoke marijuana. As if that wasn’t enough, he also called a black attorney “boy” and suggested that white lawyers who worked for black clients are race traitors.
Finished? Nope not quite. Sessions then referred to civil rights organizations as completely “un-American” and “trying to force civil rights down the throats of people who were trying to put problems behind them”
In an attempt to save his career, he defended himself by stating, “I am not the Jeff Sessions my detractors have tried to create. I am not a racist. I am not insensitive to blacks.”
This is the man Trump claims is the perfect candidate for one of the most powerful positions in the White House. However, his choice has raised many questions from the public. Sessions’ record doesn’t end with the racist accusations that nearly derailed his career. Many believe he is also an anti-women’s rights extremist. Here’s why:
- Voted to Defund Planned Parenthood
- Supported the unconstitutional 20-week abortion plan
- Claimed it’s not sexual assault to grab women by the pussy
- Voted against bipartisan legislation to curb sexual assault in the military two years in a row
- Voted against protection against clinic violence
- Opposed the Violence Against Women Act
Throughout his campaign, Trump promised time and time again to the American people that he would “Make America Great Again.” But, really, how great can it get when he continues to support and bring to power those who only hold our country back from progressing?
