Now on its second season and having moved to a new channel, Supergirl seems to be getting better and better with each episode. The DC-comic-based show is now on the CW and is a major step in the right direction for progressive television. Not only does it preach about female power, it also covers other important topics that are extremely influential to young girls with a vulnerable mindset. Such topics include how it’s okay to be different, and to find the importance and confidence in your differences to help make the world a better place. She is even shown saving her cousin, Superman’s, life, thus showing that even Superman could need saving.
Season 2 has taken a step in the right direction by having one of their POC characters become a superhero, fighting crime and helping Supergirl. At one point he even saves her life, and is not depicted as just some sidekick, but as a hero of his own (no spoilers as to who this certain hero is).
Behind the face of Supergirl is Kara Danvers, a woman who is determined and motivated to do her best at her job: being a reporter. Despite her rude boss who always seems to shut down her ideas, Kara always manages to pull through with amazing stories that end up actually impressing her boss. She also is seen not only at her best, but at her worst too, which makes her all the more relatable. She is seen crying, being angry and frustrated, and happy, which humanizes her character so much more. Kara Danvers provides a link between the super and the normal, which sends positive messages to viewers of the show.
Kara’s older sister, Alex, also has an amazing and strong storyline this season. This season showed Alex questioning and realizing her sexuality as a lesbian, and coming to terms with it. The powerful conversation between Alex and Kara as Alex explains and comes out to Kara was beautiful and inspiring. Her new girlfriend, Maggie, provides a sweet yet badass dynamic that Alex also shares, and the two of them go from fighting alien crime together to fangirling at Alex’s apartment about concert tickets. The show goes beyond the fact that they added two gay characters and gives those characters depth and develops them into realistic people, which other shows tend to forget to do.
You can stream season 1 of Supergirl now on Netflix and catch up on season 2 through the CW’s website. The show airs new episodes every Monday at 8:00 p.m. est.
