If you live near the Detroit area and are looking to hear some great music, get ready to attend the MOPOP music festival on July 29th and 30th. The venue is located at West Riverfront Park and tickets start at $75 if you get them before the day of the show and $90 on the day of the event. Aside from getting to watch headliners Solange and Foster The People perform, MO POP offers multiple “MO villages” and activities at the festival. One MO village is the Food Truck Rally Alley in which you can find delicious food to help fuel you through the day. For drinks, there’s a village called Riverside Biergarten that serves Michigan beers, Microbrews, and Craft Cider. The Craft Bazaar features unique goods and crafts made from Metro Detroit artisans that would serve as great souvenirs. Lastly, there’s the MO Arcade, a village where you can seek shade and play original classic arcade games for free. With all that MO POP has to offer, it truly celebrates Detroit’s rich culture, history, and future as “Motown.”
On the July 29th date, the musicians helping to celebrate Detroit are Foster The People, Run the Jewels, Phantogram, Wavves, Amine, Pvris, Grace Mitchell, Mondo Cozmo, Jay Som, Michigander, and Humons. The following day will feature performances by Alt-J, Solange, Tyler the Creator, Vance Joy, Arkells, Pup, Middle Kids, Shadowboxers, White Reaper, Stef Chura, and Heaters.
The highlights of the festival are sure to be Foster The People and Solange. The former shot to fame with the release of their smash 2011 hit “Pumped Up Kicks” from their debut studio album Torches. This album went on to be nominated for a Grammy award for Best Alternative Music Album. Their second studio album, Supermodel, which was released in 2014 was nothing short of success either with their song “Coming of Age.” The band is definitely a great addition to MOPOP’s 2017 lineup.
In regards to Sunday’s lineup, Solange stands out in regards to her most recent musical successes. Her 2016 album, A Seat at the Table, is brilliantly unique in its blend of neo and psychedelic soul as well as alternative R&B. If her song “Cranes In the Sky” is anything to go by, Solange is an artist to be excited about, especially for MO POP. With such a strong lineup of artists, MO POP festival will undoubtedly be a staple of every music lover’s summer.
