A minor’s skirt isn’t too short and should not be made longer because a male teacher cannot control himself. In fact the male teacher in question should be fired from his teaching position since he is a danger to his students.
However the blame is put solely on the girls, and while this is being questioned, not one school has budged or addressed this issue.
Recently a story about a school lengthening the length of their uniform skirts because it was uncomfortable for male teachers. Nearly everyone including feminist icons had strong opinions on the issue, however many defended the cis-male teachers. R&B Singer Erykah Badu claimed that the skirts should be lengthened because men are naturally attracted to female bodies, and it would be fair to both sides since both men and girls would be safe.
This logic is fundamentally wrong on all levels. We should not be blaming young girls and female and blaming people for the actions of grown men. We should not blame their self-expression and developing bodies for being sexualized by men who should know better. Also, modesty has never protected a girl, woman, or anyone one with a female body from unwanted sexual advances or assaults; in fact it never matters. Finally the logic of “men cannot control themselves” infantilizes men in two ways: by refusing to give them responsibility for their actions and by assuming they have no self control.
Ultimately girls should not be forced to change themselves for “protection” and to cater to the “uncomfortableness of cis-men. Instead why not teach cis-men and boys that their actions have consequences and that girls and women are not objects for their pleasure or taking. Also maybe firing adults who sexualize children to the point of arousal should be fired instead of having ridiculous and outdated dress codes.
