There may have been many bad things that happened in 2016 but there were also a lot of amazing women who did a lot of amazing things to make 2016 memorable.
1) Ginella Massa
Ginella Massa made history by becoming Canada’s first news anchor to wear a hijab.
2) Ibtihaj Mohammad
Ibtihaj Mohammad became the first hijab-wearing muslim American Woman to compete in the Olympics for the United States and also won a Bronze in fencing.
3) Kate Brown
Kate Brown became the first openly LGBT governor to be elected in the United States in Oregon.
4) Amal Chammout
Amal Chammout became the first hijab-wearing uniformed member of Dearborn’s police department.
5) Haneefa Adam
Haneefa Adam created the first barbie to wear a hijab, also called ‘The Hijarbie’ to promote cultural and religious diversity.
6) Claressa Sheilds
Claressa Sheilds became the first American boxer to win two gold medals in U.S history.
7) Almaz Ayana
Ethiopia’s Almaz Ayana defeated the world record for the 10,000 meter race by over 14 seconds.
8) Stephanie Murphy
Stephanie Murphy became the first Vietnamese-American woman to be elected to Congress.
9) Catherine Cortex Masto
Catherine Cortex Masto became the first Latina Senator to be elected in the United States.
10) Muzoon Alhellehan
Muzoon Ahellehan is a 17 year old Syrian refugee who has been campaigning against child marriage and promoting the importance of education for girls.
