[dropcap]W[/dropcap]hen people first see Miranda Sings, they probably think, “What is wrong with this girl?” They most likely believe she is nothing more than a childish and immature girl who posts embarrassing videos on YouTube. While this holds some truth, those who are quick to judge Miranda clearly don’t know what she is really about.
Of course, there has to be a wizard behind the smoke and mirrors, or in this case, a woman behind the excessive lipstick.
The mind behind Miranda Sings is Colleen Ballinger, a widely known YouTube personality, singer, actress, writer, and producer. What many fail to realize is that nothing about Miranda should be taken seriously. Colleen created the Miranda character to parody girls in her college who truly believed they were amazing singers when they really weren’t. Contrary to Miranda, Colleen is a talented singer who majored in vocal performance in college.
As made obvious through her videos, family is an extremely important part of Colleen’s life. She has been uploading videos on Youtube to her PsychoSoprano channel for over 8 years and has taken her family on the adventure. There isn’t a member of the Ballinger family who hasn’t had exposure to her audience by now. In fact, her brother, Christopher, and sister, Rachel, both have their own channels and frequently can be found in Colleen’s vlogs along with the rest of her family.
Colleen has used her platform to promote positivity in every way she can.
You can’t control the actions of others, you can only control yourself. So choose kindness & take the high road. It’s gonna be a great day!?

Miranda has given Colleen many opportunities, including appearing on Victorious, The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, The View, The Grace Helbig Show and Chelsea. In 2015, Ballinger wrote a book, Selp-Helf, as Miranda. Recently, Colleen and her brother Christopher created, developed, and executively produced the show “Haters Back Off” which was released in October on Netflix and has been renewed for a second season.
“Haters Back Off” is the show to watch for anyone looking for some different comedy. The show is awkward in all the right ways with characters that keep the audience entertained. An interesting plot makes it that much better and it is appropriate for all ages. Admittedly, some jokes will slip the minds of younger children but older audiences will laugh uncontrollably at them.
What people need to know is that Miranda Sings is more than just someone who can’t sing. She is a self-proclaimed singer/actor/dancer/model/magician ready to take the world by storm. Her catchphrase, “Haters back off” is something we can all learn from. People will spread hate no matter the place, and now with social media, it has become easier. Many viewers will even take time out of their own lives to leave a hate comment on a YouTuber’s video, so Miranda makes it a point to combat these haters to the best of her ability, as seen in the video above. Often times we take life too seriously and rather than building ourselves up, we bring others down in order to achieve what we want.
Miranda is exactly the kind of comic relief needed in our world today. She teaches her audience that it’s more than okay to have your own opinion on things and nobody should tell you how to live your life. Sometimes it isn’t about being the best singer and we can’t all be famous so it’s best to appreciate the talents we think we have. Miranda has 7.4 million subscribers with 1.1 billion views on her videos, by doing what she does best, entertain.
Miranda Sings is an acquired taste, but well worth it to those who are willing to give her a chance, and for anyone who still doesn’t approve, HATERS BACK OFF!
