My father came to America from Dubai to work at one of the top consulting firms in the nation. He was raised in an impoverished family in the slums of an African nation. His education, resilience, and aspirations are what saved him. He worked tirelessly to get us naturalized, and nearly a decade later, we were U.S. citizens. He made me an American.
I’d like to let Donald Trump know this: the most intelligent people I have ever met are immigrants and their children. Perhaps if Trump was not raised in an upper class white family during the Jim Crow era, he would have known this. Donald Trump, had you done even the slightest research, you would have known that a Nigerian student at Johns Hopkins University recently graduated with the highest GPA in the university’s history. He is continuing his studies at Yale Medical School. Donald Trump, had you lived up to the prestige of your alma mater, you would have known that Google, AT&T, Goldman Sachs, eBay, Comcast, Kohl’s, Colgate, Nordstrom, Sara Lee, Kraft Foods, and 40% of Fortune 500 companies were founded by immigrants and their children.
Donald Trump, you are not an American.
I’ll say it again: President Orange Peel, you are not an American. You have openly defied American values and opposed the constitution. You have divided us. “One nation, under God” can no longer be uttered with a straight face. The reasons I have always known that make America great are freedom, diversity, and justice. You have stripped immigrants from their freedom. You are at war with diversity. You are the personification of “injustice.”
I want you and your supporters to know that the Muslim Ban is an insult to your own nation. Muslims are the second most educated major religious group in the United States, trailing behind those of the Jewish faith. Muslim women hold more college degrees than Muslim men in America. We are the model American community. My last words to President Orange Peel: you are not at war with us. You are at war with the constitution.
