Everyone’s greatest nightmare, a page ruefully ripped out from a haunting book of scary stories braced itself head-on towards social elite Kim Kardashian during her stay in Paris in October of 2016. Caught in headlights, completely off guard in her hotel room in only a bathrobe, the reality star was threatened at gunpoint while being tied up by masked men stealing millions of dollars worth of her jewelry. In moments after the incident, Kim opted to lay low on social media in wake of her fear-inducing event, and eventually made a brave return on January 3rd. While people may hold their convictions against the celebrity’s decision to speak on her story, nobody holds any amount of entitlement to tell someone the right way to handle their trauma, no matter the victim’s social standing. As privileged as people may believe Kim seems, the backlash she faced in regards to the frightening robbery was immensely overwhelming and cruel. If we all need a reminder of the aftermath, let’s not forget the instance when her crime was personified into a tacky Halloween costume as an unfunny and cruel joke.
Kris Jenner, mother of Kim Kardashian made an appearance on the Ellen show and has recently spoken on Kim making her appearance on their hit tv show “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” surrounding the October night in lieu of promo for the upcoming season. Her statement, “We started filming and what was coming out of that was very therapeutic for her, I think, to just explain to us and walk us through,” entails part of the reasoning behind Kim’s decision to publicize her story. The other half of her reasoning is shared through this next quote by Jenner, “It’s remarkable to listen to her tell the story, and she does that because she just thinks that it might also bring some awareness,”.
Two main points to take from these statements: filming on the show and sharing her story is therapeutic for Kim, and she wants to wisely utilize her platform to spread awareness on the situation.
Kris goes on to mention that, “She tells what happens moment by moment and it’s riveting. It’s remarkable to listen to her tell the story. I was watching it and was bawling. I couldn’t even watch the whole thing it was so upsetting.” The viewers will get a clear picture of the robbery in a moment-by-moment format, which is clearly an extremely sensitive and emotional topic to share. While being opposed to our celebrity-obsessed culture is a matter of harmless opinion as long as these negative thoughts aren’t acted upon, remember to set aside those differences and view the situation for what it is: a terrifying crime committed against an innocent woman who deserves a bit of a break from the harsh whips of criticism and disapproval from hateful commentators. Whether you’re a fan of the Kardashians or not, violent crimes are an imperative subject that should be talked about more commonly in society; victims should not be afraid to share their stories due to the insensitivity of the masses. As a society, we must uplift the spirits of those who have been harmed rather than pelting them with petty insults and adding onto the loss of dignity many of these individuals ruthlessly face.
