It has been awhile since we have heard a new song from Lorde to grace our radios and playlists. It’s definitely been awhile since she has released an album since her iconic album, “Pure Heroine,” in 2013. So many things have happened since then with gay marriage being legal in the US, Lin Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton and the start of President Cheeto-Face.
Now, as of March 2nd, Lorde has finally dropped her new single and music video. Fans have been waiting for so long and it is clear that, “Green Lights,” is worth the 3 year wait. Even Lorde, herself, seems very excited for her new song and album, “Melodrama,” as she explained to Zane Lowe,of Beats 1, of why this song was special.
“It had to be really special and really singular, and it couldn’t sound the same as the old stuff and there was a lot of discovery that went on,” Lorde said. “And then wrote the song and I was like, ‘Oh shit, this is it.”
Green Lights is a sure hit, with it’s edgy lyrics and original sound. It even comes with a new video that will lure anyone with it’s gritty and energetic aesthetic. She has truly stepped up her game with this single. It is the perfect blend of the Lorde we knew and the Lorde we are starting to get to know. She also told Lowe that the song is about heartbreak.
“It was my first heartbreak,” Lorde said. “And the song is really about those moments kind of immediately after your life changes and about all the silly little things you gravitate towards.”
You’ve heard it here, folks. So, whether you are dancing around your room at midnight, walking around town singing late at night or you are crying your eyes out after an intense break-up, this is your anthem. And for that, we thank Lorde for the new era that is coming.
