When someone says Gotham, the first thing many people will immediately think of Batman, Catwoman, Harley Quinn, The Joker, etc. This show has all of those things, but also so much more.
The show has three main plots:
The A plot follows Commissioner James Gordon as he comes to Gotham for the first time as a detective, solving crimes with his partner Harvey Bullock. It also follows that path of his many relationships. It deals with his struggles as he fights his way through the corrupt officers to achieve justice.
The B plot follows a young Bruce Wayne, who recently witnessed the murder of his parents. His main focus in seasons 1 and 2 is to find out who killed his parents. He faces many challenges some physical most of them mental. He often teams up with Selina Kyle, Lucius Fox, and Alfred his butler (and legal guardian). It’s amazing to watch how his character evolves over the seasons into the Batman we know and love.
The C plot focuses on the Villains. In this plot you see the rise of the Riddler, how young Penguin achieved his power, the Joker being created, and multiple visits to Arkham Asylum. This is definitely a fan favorite plot, and is very complex. All of the actors involved are simply phenomenal.
The main thing that everyone wants in Gotham is power. Power is blind in the city. For example, you have the badass WOC who is Fish Mooney, and the amazing queer, disabled character that is Oswald Cobblepot, both of them having ruled the city. The reason I love Gotham so much, is because it’s a city without racism, sexism, homophobia, etc. It doesn’t matter who you are, if you’re a man or woman, gay, straight, black, or white, if you’re smart you can achieve greatness in this mad city.
This show isn’t perfect, no show is. There will always be some things that aren’t right, that don’t make sense, but you can’t just ignore the fact that this is an amazing show, with great characters, and a good message.
