After a year of the Badlands era, Halsey has announced the official title of her upcoming album, out June of this year: “Hopeless Fountain Kingdom”. Following the criticism she received from music critics on the title, the New Americana-singer replies with statements hinting towards the depth of the record’s concept. A tweet by Halsey from March 8 says, “I didn’t name it that for fun. It means something.”
The teasing for this new album began on August 13, 2016 when Halsey played Madison Square Garden in New York City. At the very end of her set, the singer revealed a cryptic video, displayed onstage, of incomprehensible content, which several fans immediately shared their theories for. In the last few seconds of the clip, the words “You can find me in the kingdom” flickered onscreen. Following excited roars from the crowd of 20,000 dedicated fans, Twitter and other social media outlets went wild with confused speculations.
Although the announcement of the record title was tweeted alongside a photo that seemed to be of significance to fans, Halsey confirmed that the picture was in fact not the album’s cover. The photo was also commonly compared to the cover of singer-songwriter Kehlani’s “SweetSexySavage” due to small similarities, despite the two photos being very different. Halsey also responded to those comments by tweeting “Guess we got short hair & shiny bodies. Kehlani is the most dope but she does her & I do me.” The comparisons have since been, for the most part, unspoken of.
Accounts believed to be run by Halsey (through her retweets and her running an account surrounding the concept of her debut album, Badlands, in the past) have been tweeting enigmatic quotes, especially pertaining to Romeo and Juliet, which is predicted to be the album’s theme. One of these accounts tweeted a link to a website on February 16 which led to the RSVP for a London event that was only open to European fans. Halsey then chose a select group of fans to hear four songs off the upcoming album in an undisclosed location.
Now being left in suspense, Halsey fans can only theorize and discuss what they believe to be the artist’s next plans. Some question whether or not there will any more information released within the next few weeks, but, ultimately, there is no way of the fans truly knowing what Halsey has in store for them and the creativity of her upcoming record.
