On October 19, 2016, Teen Vogue posted the first episode of their new segment called “Body Party”. The purpose of the show is to shine a light on many of the misconceptions about the modeling industry and to serve as a more relatable platform for several teens.
Not only does the “Body Party” playlist consist of plus size body posi, it also encompasses all types of body positivity: from being a boy, to being transgender, to being too skinny, no topic is off the table.
The show stars Barbie Ferreira, an extremely upbeat, positive, plus size model who radiates positive vibes. In the first episode, right off the bat, Barbie establishes her authenticity (something rare to find in such accomplished models) by heading back to her own high school in New Jersey and having a down to Earth talk with real teenagers.
Not only is Barbie the star of “Body Party”, but she has also been featured on Missguided, Galore TV, and was named one of Time’s most influential teens of the year. She is well known for her promotion of self-love and her confessions about struggles with her body and fat-shaming. Barbie has admitted that as a young girl she was concerned with her image, but upon growing up she has realized the beauty and love that she brings to the world.
Instead of parading unrealistic body types around, expecting little girls to begin dieting before they can recite the alphabet, we should be promoting more wonderful human beings like Barbie Ferreira and encouraging the next generation to love themselves unconditionally.
