On Wednesday the 29th March 2017, Teresa May changed the course of UK/European history forever. By triggering article 50 and therefore, starting the process for the UK to Leave the European Union. Although a seemingly unnecessary and bad decision, it is one the people voted for, and with a 52/48 Brexit win, we’re all condemned to go hurtling into the unknown, no plan, no strategy and certainly no idea about how this Brexit will take place in two years time.
Within the realms of social media I see a lot of Brexiteers, complaining about the Prime Minister. Things said such as, “Why can’t we leave now” and “I don’t know what article 50 is why can’t we just leave the EU straight away”. Well, Article 50 is the technical, legal way of leaving the EU, it means we enter into negotiations about things like the money the UK may owe to the EU in order to leave, and making sure each member of the EU is satisfied with how we leave. Not to mention, how our laws will change, our membership of the single market and lots of technical jargon-y but important things we need to settle with the EU Council before we say ta ta.
So it seems comical to me that to some it may seem that one day we can be a member of the EU and the next day we are not. Two years it is supposed to take, after two years we should be settled up and ready to rule, new laws and all. To me two years doesn’t seem long enough to get through the amount Parliament need to get through, and make everyone happy, but who am I kidding, by the end of this divorce i’ll be surprised if anyone is happy with the outcome.
