This past Friday, the American Civil Liberties Union, a nonprofit organization, held a telethon to help fundraise. With the numerous attacks on the rights of Americans this past year, the ACLU has been working hard to fulfill their promise to “work tirelessly in courts, legislatures, and communities to defend are preserve the Constitution’s promise of liberty for everyone in our country.” Among the well know figures that took part in the telethon to support the ACLU was Tina Fey. She shared her opinion on civil rights and politics at the moment.
Firstly, in a discussion during the telethon, she brought up female college educated women who now might be feeling regretful about their decision to vote for Trump. She explains that “a lot of this election was turned by white, college-educated women who now would like to forget about this election and go back to watching HGTV.” However, she wants them to understand that
they “can’t look away because it doesn’t affect [them] this minute, but it’s going to affect [them] eventually.”
In highlighting the common attempt to hide from the reality of what is going on in politics today, she is bringing attention to an issue that needs to be understood. All people, including these women, need to realize that in order to create change, we must accept the situation we have put ourselves in and become active in protecting our rights that are being threatened.
Tina Fey brought attention to these threatened rights during a comedic monologue at the event, explaining that “it’s not just about fighting for progress. Gains that we’ve made over the past 100 years are under attack.” She poked fun at Vice President Mike Pence and President Donald Trump during the discussion as well, drawing attention to unacceptable behavior they have been accused of in the past. She reassured viewers that “Mike Pence isn’t allowed to go down and shut up Planned Parenthood unless his wife goes with him. So you know, if we can just keep Karen busy scrapbooking — we can all still get a pap smear.” She is likely referencing a past remark made by Pence about never dining with a woman without his wife present that resurfaced the previous week. She also commented on the newly declared National Sexual Assault and Awareness Prevention month, calling it an “April Fools’ joke” and explaining that at least we now know “what [Trump] gave up for Lent.” She was most likely insinuating that he gave up sexual assault, drawing attention to the multiple sexual assault accusations against him that surfaced during the election period. This includes the allegation that he raped a thirteen-year-old girl.
These comments are now trending online. Through the use of her talent in comedy and fame, Tina Fey was able to further the awareness of critical civil rights issues and support the ACLU organization. Hopefully, her comments will inspire other stars to use their talent and fame to bring awareness to similar issues.
