After the deadly and catastrophic toll Hurricane Harvey has had on Houston, TX in the last couple of weeks, the last thing the world needs is another strong hurricane. The rumors of Hurricane Irma, which recently began as a surreality: something that everyone chose not to believe, not being able to handle another major storm.
However, Irma has become very real, reaching a category 5 and already hitting the northern Caribbean islands. Wednesday night, Irma caused countless fatalities and damage on islands Antigua and Barbuda. Barbuda Prime Minister Gaston Browne states that his country is “literally rubble,” according to a report by CNN.
The storm is traveling northward towards Florida in the U.S.; though, it must first travel through the remainder of the Caribbean islands, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Haiti, and Cuba.
Hurricane Irma has been reported as one of the strongest hurricanes the Atlantic Ocean has ever spawned, reaching up to 185 mph winds. It is predicted that the storm will create unseen damage which is particularly problematic for the Central American countries whose governments are not able to afford the number of repairs needed.
In terms of damage, the islands that have been hit thus far have collapsed government buildings, houses, and other structures that have been noted as some of the strongest on the islands. The storm has left the northern Caribbean islands without any power or connection to the rest of the world.
It is unknown right now the exact direction and duration of Hurricane Irma’s path.
