Introducing The Next Generation Of Leaders And Thinkers

Black Girl Magic: Simone Biles

Leading the 2016 Fierce 5 and representing The United States in the 2016 Rio Olympics, its no doubt that 19 year old Simone Biles is under enormous pressure. This will be her first Olympics and the only competition that she see’s, is herself. Already established as a 3 time world all- around champion! Simone feels as though she is still a regular girl, just like those millions of girls (such as myself) that she continues to inspire! Enjoying the looks of Zac Efron, emoji’s and social media when she has time ,through her 30+ training week. Simone continues to be a pleasure to her teammates, family and fans! This black girl could possibly make history and become the most decorated American gymnast of all time! Simone continues to break barriers, challenge ideals and perfect her craft, but along with the success comes racism, and hate.

In 2013, Carolotta Ferlito made a racist remark that insisted that the only reason why Biles, won the world champion, was because of the color of her skin. Ferlito has since apologized. But to make matters even worst, David Ciaralli, a spokesman, wrote on facebook that “the Code of Points is opening chances for colored people and penalizing the typical Eastern European elegance, which, when gymnastics was more artistic and less acrobatic, allowed Russia and Romania to dominate the field.” Which basically undermines the hard work and talent of people of color who are excellent athletes in gymnastics!

Nevertheless, Simone’s Black girl magic continued to soar since, Not only has she been the FIRST woman of color who has won all-around titles, has a signature move named the “The Biles”, but also now the face of the 2016 gymnastic team in the Olympics. Simone’s Black girl magic continues to not only inspire girls of color, but also young gymnast of any background!

We here back at the states and around the world would love to congratulate and wish Simone the best of luck. You are a black girl, who’s magic continues to empower, inspire and create new heights for young girls in the sports industry!
