Senators Call on Donald Trump to Step Down Following Franken’s Resignation

Following Al Franken’s resignation, many senators are pushing for President Trump to do the same due to his extensive history of sexual harassment. During his 2016 presidential campaign, Trump was accused of sexual harassment or misconduct by over 19 women, with the most recent being ex-Fox News anchor Julia Huddy. Despite bragging about sexual assault on tape, Trump denies these allegations.

Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) is one of many senators pressing for Trump’s resignation. “Al Franken felt it proper for him to resign,” Sanders said in an interview. “Here you have a president who has been accused by many women of assault, who says on a tape that he assaulted women. He might want to think about doing the same.”

Sens. Jeff Merkley (D-OR) and Cory Booker (D-NJ) are also among those calling on Trump to step down in the wake of Franken’s resignation. Booker explained in an interview with Vice News that he feels the president should be held to the same standard that brought down Franken. “I just watched Senator Al Franken do the honorable thing and resign from his office,” Booker said. “My question is, why isn’t Trump doing the same thing — who has more serious allegations against him, with more women who have come forward. The fact pattern on him is far more damning than the fact pattern on Al Franken.”

Although not harassing women in the first place would be the honorable thing, those accused of sexual harassment should, at the very least, acknowledge their wrongdoing and step down from their position of power. Unfortunately, Donald Trump and many of his Republican colleagues seem incapable of grasping this simple concept.

Amid these fresh attacks on Trump, he has, ironically, been out endorsing Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore. Moore has been accused of sexually assaulting teenage girls, with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnel stating he believes these accusations and thinks Moore should step down from the Senate race. Moore responded to these accusations in telling an Alabama television station “I never molested anyone, for them to say that, I don’t know why they’re saying that but it’s not true.” Even despite the countless reasons why Roy Moore is unsuitable for a position in the Senate, the need for him to state that he never molested teenagers should be sufficient reason for his disqualification. Trump, unsurprisingly, doesn’t share this point of view.
