Brexit: How The Oldies of Britian Stole The Younger Generation’s Future

Yes, this is actually happening- the referendum has voted to withdraw Britain from the EU. The EU, or the European Union, works to connect European nations by promising solidarity through interconnected travel, labor, and law.  Through the EU, Britain’s population and economy have grown immensly, still some wanted out.

Prime minister Dave Cameron was not one of these people that yearned for this change. Although he promised a referendum during his campaign to get elected, Cameron also endlessly campaigned for Britian to remain in the EU. The prime minister watched his hard work go to waste as the polls claimed the majority of Britain opted to leave the EU. Clearly distraught, the prime minister resigned, seemingly abandoning ship and leaving Britian to figure this mess out themselves.

The millenials are not happy. Through hashtags and trending topics, the youth have taken to social media to report their devastation admist the referendum results. So if it’s not the new generation that voted in favor of the leave, then who is it? The answer to this question would lie in the age group of British citizens aged 65 and up. Research shows that this is the key demographic that voted in favor of the leave. The age group that will likely not be around to see true results of the leave, are the ones who ultimately decided the future of Britian.

Many believe that xenophobia, or the fear of people from other countries, came to play in the decision. The withdrawal from the EU could cut Britian off from the diverse culture of its surrounding European countries. Without the Eu, Britian will no longer feel obligated to accept immigrants or workers from European nations, a prospect that the EU proudly offered. In fact, the increase of immigrants in Britian is a key reason why some wanted to leave the EU in the first place.

This monumental decision will also affect Britian’s economy, as some predict a decrease of up to 8 percent. Already, Britian has lost some $350 billion, more than 40 years of progress in the EU’s part. The British pound is also losing its value, hinting at a bleak furure for the British economy. As the pound loses its value, it will effect the likes of the Anerican dollar and dozens of other defendant currency. This is merely the beginning as the effects of Britain leaving will most likely be seen for years to come. Still, it’s a bit alarming to see such drasticly devastating changes just hours after the verdict.

However, the majority of Britain or at least those who voted in favor of the leave believe that this decision marks a new era of change for Britain. Some believe that the referendum result reflects British democracy and the power of listening to the people. If Britain successfully withdrawals, they will achieve the goal of having an independent nation free of any ties with the EU and with more nationalistic power than before.

As Britain prepares for this movement, they continue to face protest from both its citizens and surrounding countries. Scotland seemingly wants to stay in the EU and in turn break away from the UK. The country will face their own referendum in September to settle this issue.

And to the generation of millenials and young ones that will be effected the most by this withdrawal, I fear for their future the most. I fear that they feel as if they have been let down by their government. I fear that they feel misrepresented. I fear for their economy and the new Britian that they will be forced to grow and live in. Britian, what have you done?
