Introducing The Next Generation Of Leaders And Thinkers

An Open Letter to Jeremy Corbyn

The election has come to an end — for now at least — and our parliament is in chaos with even more uncertainty surrounding our government than there was before. But not all is lost, there is someone that has benefitted from this election. Jeremy Corbyn has been doubted throughout his whole run as Labour leader, but even more so as he stood for the role of Prime Minister. However, he has defied all expectations, proving to people but in and outside of the Labour circle that he is worthy competition, he’s serious about this and it’s time he was listened to. So, Jeremy Corbyn: here is a thank you note from all of us.

Thank you for restoring Labour to what it once was, what it was supposed to be. Gone are the days of Blairite policies, instead we have moved back to socialism and protecting those that can’t protect themselves in parliament. You have changed politics for the better, showing that close media relationships and popularity politics are not what is needed to succeed. Instead, it’s the manifestos, the campaign, speaking to real people and showing real understanding. You don’t play dirty politics and you don’t need to. Labour is for the people, for the many and not the few and we’re behind you as leader 100% – and we haven’t felt that way in awhile.

Thank you for your relentless fighting to improve the lives of the unrepresented within politics. Watching you draw in thousands of people throughout your campaign, regardless of gender, race, and class, provided a sense of unity. It showed us the possibilities of what could happen with a Labour government. Everyone felt as if they had a voice; as if their opinion and their needs finally mattered to a politician that wants the best for them and this country, rather than just their career. Thank you for speaking up for the W.A.S.P.I. women, for the refugees, for the working class, for everyone that was fighting to be heard.

You have given us hope that someone is finally listening, and something is going to change.

Thank you for speaking up for the youth, for making us engage in this election – for many, this was the first time. The amount of 18 to 25-year-olds signing up to vote shows how we finally felt involved in politics. We finally felt like our vote would matter, that we had to speak up for what we needed. Thank you for proposing to scrap university fees, for protecting our education from commercialization, and for ensuring that all students could have the best school experience regardless of their parents’ income. Thank you for encouraging students involved in the arts, recognizing the importance in creativity and self-expression. For years they have been discouraged through spending cuts, and your governance offered them bigger budgets and more opportunities, raising standards to meet the rest of Europe. You are the first politician that a lot of us have related to, who’s world view matches ours and you’re capable of fulfilling it. The way in which you have inspired young voters hasn’t been matched by any other politician in this election nor others. Instead, you have ignited a political spark which will keep us involved in politics for years to come. Thank you for never giving up on us.

Whilst you may not have won (yet), you have shown how strong of a leader you are, how willing you are to serve the people of this country in a way that benefits us all. Labour can bring us hope, it already has in the form of it’s leader. A man that’s for the many, not the few and is prepared to do what it takes to restore this country. Thank you, Jeremy Corbyn, because without you many of us would’ve given up on politics, would’ve stayed inside June 8 and ignored what was happening in our Parliament. Now, we move forward past this election and into a coalition none of us are sure on. But even though our government doesn’t feel strong nor stable, we know we have a politician we can trust in you. Thank you.
