In case you missed the latest topic that broke the internet the last few days, CoverGirl has announced their newest model for the brand, and he is a teenager boy. James Charles, a seventeen-year-old aspiring makeup artist from New York has only been experimenting with makeup for a year, with over 700,000 followers on Instagram and a YouTube channel that acclaimed over 100,000 subscribers in only seven months. Charles sees his love for makeup as an art form and a way to express himself. “I really hope that as the first male CoverGirl that I am able to inspire others and give other people confidence to try out makeup! Hey, if a random seventeen-year-old guy can do it, you DEFINITELY can too!”
Fellow CoverGirl ambassador Katy Perry showed her support for the teenager in a sweet Instagram post with a caption that reads as, “Just wrapped another great @COVERGIRL shoot. Honored to have the pleasure to announce the very first COVERBOY, James Charles!”
His rise to fame was definitely rapid and unexpected, when only a short time ago a friend asked him to do her makeup for prom even though he had never done makeup previously. He liked the outcome so he posted a photo to Instagram, and others responded positively. He started doing more makeup looks for friends, and in a few short weeks he tried it on himself. And now, he will star in an upcoming television ad.
CoverGirl’s goal was to break the boundary between men and women when it comes to makeup, as they shared a statement in a press release. “All of our CoverGirls are role models and boundary-breakers, fearlessly expressing themselves, standing up for what they believe, and redefining what it means to be beautiful, James Charles is no exception. One year ago, he boldly chose to launch his Instagram to the world, using transformative, dynamic makeup looks to showcase the many facets of his personality, serving as an inspiration to anyone who might have been afraid to do the same.”
In a world where it can be shameful to be yourself, the makeup brand took a bold move. Kudos, Covergirl and congratulations to James Charles.
