As a senior in high school I found the most daunting thing, like many other students, to be college and university. I wasn’t in the percentage of students that would be accepted to ivy leagues on specific scholarships but my grades weren’t terrible either. I could see myself going to university but when I imagined my surroundings, as in the school and the fields of study I would dedicate myself to, I came up blank. I had absolutely no idea what I was going to pursue at that time and so applying to an expensive school, seemed like a waste. Of course, if not for other reasons, this could have been a mistake and so the first thing to be said is that if you have the grades, applying will never hurt. Still, for me, I don’t believe I picked the wrong path.
I’m now a Freshman in city college and the amount I’ve learned in just the past four months is astounding. First of all, I figured out what I wanted to pursue two months into school; Journalism. That being said, I wouldn’t have found it without the help of the counseling 48 class I took as a unit filler. Calling the class a filler may make it sound insignificant but in reality, my major declaration would have been impossible otherwise. If you’re anything like I was during my last year of high school, you’re probably unsure of what you could possibly dedicate yourself to.
Picking a major isn’t something to take lightly, because it is the first step to finding a career that may very well fulfill your life’s purpose.
That sounds overly dramatic, but it’s still important. Either way, if you decide to go into junior college, or university if the school offers it, what worked for me might just be what leads you to your major.
Counseling classes can vary depending on their course descriptions but they are definitely more than easy A’s and unit fillers. The class I took dedicated itself to career exploration and was mainly focused on learning what kinds of career one’s personality type suits. Through the various personality tests and exercises, I was able to find the types of careers and thus majors that would be best for me. Without the resources, such as the MBTI and personality mosaic test I took, it is likely I would still be stuck in the same uncertain state of mind I was in senior year. If you have the chance to take a counseling class that will work for you and help you find what you want to do, I strongly encourage you to enroll in it. It may be your way to finding what will fulfill your life.
