Happiness is an inside job; it doesn’t come from a certain food, a soulmate, or simply an über-positive and cheery demeanor (although these things certainly do help). Happiness takes time and effort, and the realization that nobody can be happy 100% of the time. These eight tips are small things you can do to make a big impact on your happiness and outlook on life.
- Stop living in the past: If all you are doing is thinking back to the past, you’re not living in the present. You are limiting yourself and your ideas by not focusing on the here and now. Instead of having concerns and qualms about events that happened in the past, realize that the past cannot be changed, and what truly matters is how you carry yourself from this point forward.
- Stop worrying about the future: Don’t stress yourself out now while worrying about the future. I find myself guilty of this sometimes, but I have to remember that I am doing the best that I can in the present, and the future will work itself out in the end. Remind yourself to breathe, and take it easy.
- Organize your day: By making a to-do list and setting small goals for yourself, having a list of necessary tasks is a simple way to remind yourself and keep you on task. Extra points if you use sparkly gel pens.
- Talk to people: If you’re feeling down, consult in a trusty friend and talk to them about what’s bothering you. Chances are that they’ve felt the way you’re feeling too; alternatively, if for whatever reason you do not want to or cannot consult in somebody, try writing in a journal, as it can have a similar effect and relieve you of at least some of your stress.
- Clean your room: If there’s anything I’ve learned from all the minimalism documentaries on Netflix; a clean space is a clean mind. By decluttering your area, your mind is at ease; and it’s always refreshing to walk into a tidy room. Having a creative space that exudes inspiration and positivity spreads into other areas of your life as well. Designate fifteen minutes every day when you come home to tidy your room; pick up dirty clothes from the floor, put clean laundry away, and juggle the empty water bottles to the nearest trash can.
- Listen to upbeat music: Listening to feel-good music makes you happier, as studies have shown that upbeat music can boost one’s mood and lessen anxiety.
- Take care of yourself: Whether that’s painting your nails, soaking in the bath, or taking a four hour nap, it’s important to listen to your body and let it rest and restore. Relaxation is important, but so is movement. A quick, twenty-minute workout does wonders for the body and mind. Having a happy body and a happy mind puts you on track to live a happier lifestyle.
- Smile: Research shows that the sole action moving your face muscles to create a smile boosts feelings of happiness.
This list is only a compilation of tips that I have found work best for me, and what works for me may not work for you. Remember that happiness does not occur overnight, and is something that is worked towards. And lastly, it’s okay to be sad, your feelings are valid, and it is important to acknowledge each emotion rather than try to brush it off and cover it up. Sending lots of positivity and smiles your way.
