The Senate Voted To Defund Planned Parenthood: What Does This Mean?

There are many negative connotations that have been made because of inaccurate assumptions by those who are against Planned Parenthood. The most prominent being those concerned with the abortions that take place within these facilities. It is important to keep in mind that abortions are not the only services that Planned Parenthood has to offer in fact, it makes up only 3% of what Planned Parenthood is about. Planned Parenthood offers one of the most affordable healthcares for not only women but men and young adults, as well as the nation’s largest sex education provider. Planned Parenthood offers STD testing and treatment, cancer screening and prevention, and family practice services. In total they have provided medical services to 10,933,675 men and women in the nation. As you can see it isn’t only about abortions, they offer services that are vital for citizens who are not able to afford costly healthcare.

Republicans in the Senate have been trying to achieve their goal of defunding Planned Parenthood for a very long time. Not only that, but they have also been trying to repeal the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) which makes healthcare and health insurance more affordable and more available to more Americans.

The shooting that recently happened at a Planned Parenthood facility apparently wasn’t enough to stop Republicans in the Senate from continuing the fight for the defunding of Planned Parenthood. They demand that we don’t “murder children” as they love to say yet they don’t do anything to protect actual lives that are being taken by their supporters, how contradicting.

If the defunding of Planned Parenthood were to happen millions of men and women would lose the ability to afford healthcare and will be left vulnerable simply because Republicans don’t agree with only 3% of what Planned Parenthood does, that as well contradicts their “pro-life” standpoint. I don’t see how you can be pro-life while simultaneously stripping citizens of their only way of getting affordable healthcare. I thought the government is supposed to be taking care of its citizens, not preventing them from having the privilege of being healthy?

Everyone is raging but I am here to say that you have nothing to worry about because even though the Senate has voted for the bill to pass, it has to be signed by the president to be made into a law. According to NBC, the white house has already confirmed that the president will veto the legislation when it reaches his desk and Republicans do not have the two-thirds majority needed to override that veto. However, that does not mean

It seems incredible to me that male Republicans continue to speak over and police women’s bodies how they have been doing. I myself, would never get an abortion but that will never stop me from fighting for women and the right they have to make decisions concerning their own bodies. We have to realize that each individual person has the right to decide for themselves what they do or do not do about their own bodies. I find it absurd that we as women are not able to make these decisions without being demonized and criticized.

Many of these Republicans are using religious arguments to be against abortion and it’s apparent that the “separation of church and state” ceases to exist in the minds of these male Republicans, along with the rights for women.
