Donald Trump Perpetuating Rape Culture

Donald Trump has become a favorable candidate in the upcoming presidential election. He holds many valuable assets that have the potential to recover and reform our nation as well as its economic state. He possesses a strong understanding of the necessity for employment and increased job opportunities. Trump also has a vast knowledge of branding, which could potentially be a strong benefactor to repairing our relationships with other countries.

Due to his business mentality, he speaks very freely, and does not handle himself in the manner that a political figure typically would. While many people have seemed to like this forward approach, his words could also be putting him in a compromising position. This being because of his misogynistic attitude towards women.

While Trump claims he has “such respect for women”, his words and actions speak otherwise. There have been multiple occasions where he has voiced inappropriate and sexist opinions towards women. He recently quoted a tweet saying “If Hillary Clinton can’t satisfy her husband what makes her think she can satisfy America?”. This creates an idea that women have no value other than that of sexual nature, and belittles a woman’s intelligence and political standpoint.

Another incident also occurred recently in regards to rape allegations made by Trump’s ex wife, Ivana. When the allegations were discussed, Trump’s lawyer stated, “You cannot rape your spouse.” However, any educated individual should realize that every sexual act without consent is considered rape. The connection between the two parties is irrelevant.

This is not the first occasion where Trump, or one of his representatives, has voiced their opinion on rape. In 2013, while discussing the alarming rate of rape as well as sexual assault in the military, Trump placed blame on the presence of women. He tweeted in 2013, “6,000 unreported sexual [assaults] in the military—only 238 convictions. What did these geniuses expect when they put men & women together?” He is essentially saying that, by nature, men will rape women because they are tempted by them. Should these men not be practicing self control?

Both Trump’s statement as well as his lawyer’s are appropriating rape culture in America. He has a clear disrespect for women as well as their place in society. While working towards equal rights and civil liberties, is this the kind of person we want to be running our country?
