Introducing The Next Generation Of Leaders And Thinkers

Why You Aren’t “Pro-Life”

You’re afraid of terrorists. You won’t let refugees into our country because what if they’re terrorists? Some of them are children no older than ten, but they might be terrorists! You stop every Middle Eastern person at the airport just to be safe. Safe from what? Terrorists. But what about the terrorists that are already here? What about the potentially white, Christian terrorists?

They often go by the name of “pro-lifers”.

Recently, there has been extreme controversy over whether or not abortion should be legal and covered by healthcare. Supporters and opposers are categorized by the terms pro-choice and pro-life. People taking the pro-choice stance do not always personally agree with the concept of abortion, but they recognize and believe that people should be able to make their own decisions concerning their personal healthcare. People taking the pro-life stance, on the other hand, do not support or condone abortion, sometimes even in extreme cases (which would be incest and rape).

Within the past year, this controversy has skyrocketed. In late September, both the House and the Senate passed bills enabling the defunding of Planned Parenthood, a non-profit organization that provides reproductive healthcare to men and women alike. At the beginning of September, arsonists in Washington burned down a Planned Parenthood clinic. And now, a gunman and multiple police officers have engaged in a shootout in a Planned Parenthood clinic in Colorado Springs. Admittedly, authorities are still unsure whether or not Planned Parenthood was the gunman’s target, but this tragedy presents us with the opportunity to talk about why the terminology ‘pro-life’ is not correct.

If you support a person giving birth even though they know that their body is not able to endure the pregnancy, you are not pro-life, because you do not care about the life of the mother/father/person with the vagina. (Reminder: some trans men, agender individuals, genderfluid people, etc can give birth!) If you support a person that is unable to afford a pregnancy—let alone a child—giving birth, than you are not pro-life, because you do not care about the actual life of this kid, just that it’s born. If you support a person who has been impregnated by another member of their family giving birth even though birth defects are all but guaranteed, you are not pro-life. If you support a person giving birth to the child of their rapist, knowing that the mother/father/person with the vagina will suffer PTSD triggered by their own child, you are not pro-life.

You don’t have to support abortion to be pro-choice. You don’t have to agree with it, and you don’t have to have one yourself. You just have to agree with the ideology that people with vaginas should be allowed to make their own decisions when it comes to their personal healthcare. This is not a religious nor political debate, it is a basic human right.

You are not pro-life if you do not support saving refugees lives by letting them into our country. You are not pro-life if you support the death penalty. You cannot call yourself pro-life if you’ll turn your head at the hate crimes against Planned Parenthood and other abortion clinics. If you are trying to take away a person’s reproductive rights based purely on your own personal beliefs, you are not pro-life.

    You are anti-choice.
