In the world of music, it’s hard to separate the art from the artist. This is especially difficult when a musician is so ingrained in his or her art, that the difference between the performer and the person barely exists. Kanye West is the most prevalent example of this kind of artist. He said it himself, he would “die for the art.” Kanye’s artistic genius is undeniable, but his blatant misogyny towards his ex-girlfriend, Amber Rose, is inexcusable.
From 2008 to 2010, Kanye dated Amber Rose, a model who is often criticized for her past as a stripper. One of Kanye’s most critically-acclaimed albums, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, was released in 2010 after the couple broke up. The album is rumored to be about their complicated relationship, and in an interview with GQ, Rose said, “I know he’s talking to me through music.” Rose began a relationship and had a son with rapper Wiz Khalifa that ended in 2014. She is currently raising her son while Kanye is married to Kim Kardashian.
West has repeatedly vilified Amber Rose since their relationship ended. While doing an interview with The Breakfast Club, West said, “It’s very hard for a woman to want to be with someone that’s with Amber Rose… I had to take 30 showers before I got with Kim.” This blatantly depicts Amber as “dirty,” as if her sexual history diminishes her worth as a human being. Wiz Khalifa has also mocked her by not-so-subtly referencing her in a song by rapping, “I fell in love with a stripper, Funny thing is I fell back out of love quicker… Bottles be turnin these girls into thots, Instagram turnin these wifes into hoes.” Slut-shaming is a lucrative business.
Kanye has made it very clear that without him, “there wouldn’t be an Amber Rose.” Kanye speaks about Amber like she is an experiment gone wrong. He believes that she owes him everything, even though he’s done nothing but slander her since they broke up.
On January 27th, Wiz Khalifa posted a series of tweets making fun of Kanye’s next album name WAVES which prompted Kanye’s response. Kanye began ranting on Twitter about how “corny” Wiz’s music is, until he mentioned how Wiz “wouldn’t have a child if it wasn’t for me.” According to this logic, since Kanye dated Amber, anything that she does is ultimately related to him, including having a child. Insulting someone’s music is one thing, claiming that you “own” that person’s child is another.
Kanye later deleted the tweets shortly after “Muva” Amber Rose responded.
It’s questionable if Kanye ever truly got over Amber Rose. He clearly finds it inconceivable that his ex-girlfriend could be so successful without him. So what do you do when you feel threatened by a woman? Insult her, of course. What’s the easiest way to insult a woman? Just call her a whore. Millions of people will agree with you.
Rose’s exes slut-shame her like it’s going out of style. This misogyny runs deep. Kanye didn’t think Amber was filthy back when he was licking her bald head. The fact that Rose gave birth to Wiz Khalifa’s son did not stop him from writing a misogynist song about her. However, once a woman leaves a man, her sexuality is suddenly something to ridicule.
There is a glaring double-standard here. Kim Kardashian is often criticized for making a sex-tape with Ray-J. If Amber Rose and Kim Kardashian have both been slut-shamed for their sexual history before, what makes Kim “cleaner” than Amber? Does Kanye only call women whores after they stopped having sex with him? Kanye has never referred to Kim in any of the derogatory ways he speaks about Amber, but he might if they ever get a divorce.
Using a woman’s sexual history to shame her is rooted in abusive and misogynistic behavior. Kanye has constantly disrespected Amber Rose in the past, and it’s doubtful if he will ever apologize.
