Recently transgender people have taken to sharing photos of their transition journeys using the hashtag, #MomentsInTransition. It all started with trans teenager Gabrielle Diana sharing photos of her before and after transition using the hashtag. Unsurprisingly, more trans people decided to do the same. Gabrielle said that, “In the trans community I’ve seen a lot of people always looking for what they WANT to be in the future, which is totally understandable.”

For many, the transition process doesn’t happen for many reasons- they can’t afford it, a parent or guardian won’t allow it, or they just might not want it. But, for those who do have the opportunity to undergo the process, it is life changing. “I think it’s important to look back on defining moments in our transitions and really give […] ourselves props, because it’s so important that we recognize our hard work and let it really be noticed.”

Physical transition is not an easy process. There’s hormone therapy which is taking testosterone (female-to-male transition) or estrogen (male-to-female transition) to help the body become more like the one the person desires. The hormones can be given through patch, cream, or injection and doses vary depending on what the person desires. Next is surgery which varies according to FTM or MTF. Something as hard and as important as transitioning needs to be celebrated!

The #MomentsInTransition hashtag as well as the #TransVisibilityDay one are both wonderful things that have allowed trans people to come out and openly celebrate themselves and each other for having come so far, but also to acknowledge those who haven’t and those who unfortunately never will. Trans people should be supported by all members of the LGBTQA+ because being proud of who you are is hard enough without support.
