Introducing The Next Generation Of Leaders And Thinkers

8 Mexicans That Beat Donald Trump’s Generalizations

It’s been a good year-and-a-half since America’s President-elect said the words that shocked everyone: “When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.”

How lovely. I think this might be a good time to remind Mr. Trump, and anyone who is reading this, that you can’t define an entire nation as rapists, criminals or drug dealers. That is why I’ve compiled a list of eight (just to name a few) of the most successful Mexicans in the United States.

1. Cesar Millan

You’ve probably heard of him, or seen him surrounded by dogs on your TV. He’s the famous dog trainer. Millan was born in Sinaloa, Culiacán, and at the age of 21 he crossed the Mexican border to the United States with neither a visa nor any knowledge of the English language; the rest is history. Millan gained fame and success from his reality show “Dog Whisperer” and then continued on to star in “Cesar 911”, publish multiple New York Times best-selling books, and be highly acclaimed in the canine field.

2. Rosa Macías

No, she isn’t famous, but she’s a great example of hard work. Rosa and her husband moved to the States with the sole purpose of giving their children a better life, a life that they weren’t able to have. Despite them not knowing much about America in general, they took a chance by establishing a furniture store in Phoenix, Arizona, called Del Sol Furniture, which is a very successful store. Their motto is ‘furnishing dreams’; “We don’t only sell furniture, but we also create dreams for people.”

3. Alejandro González Iñárritu

Iñárritu is a screenwriter, director and producer. He won an Oscar for Best Director in 2015 for the film “The Revenant” (the film that won Leonardo DiCaprio his first Oscar). What else can I say? He won a freaking Oscar.

4. Salma Hayek

Salma is an actress that started off by acting in the famous Mexican soap opera ‘Teresa’. She then moved to the U.S. to pursue more and better opportunities. In 2002, she landed the main role on ‘Frida’ (a film about Frida Kahlo, the Mexican painter), which got her an Oscar nomination for Best Female Actress; she was the first Latina woman to be nominated in that category.

5. Manny Hernández

Hernández was born in Mexico, but he had always wanted to explore America. He opened a food truck in Chicago called ‘The Tamale Spaceship’, which serves ‘authentic Mexican cuisine’ (mainly tamales), and is inspired by ‘lucha libre’ (Mexican professional wrestling). He has been awarded by the Chicago Journal, Chicago Magazine and Time Out Chicago for having the best food truck.

6. Dulce Pinzón

Dulce is a photographer whose ‘work is influenced by feelings of nostalgia, questions of identity, and political and cultural frustrations’. She currently divides her time between Mexico and New York. In 2013, she published a book entitled ‘The real story of The Superheroes’ which was translated in three different languages.

7. Jaime Lucero

Jaime was born in Puebla, Mexico. In 1975, he moved to America without having finished his middle school education. A few years later, Lucero had already established a clothing distributor company. His next project consisted of creating ‘El Instituto de Estudios Mexicanos’ (Institute of Mexican Studies) in 2012. Since then, he has helped a lot of undocumented students and has given a lot of scholarships to aid financially weak students.

8. Tatiana Bilbao

She is an architect who has taught at Yale and Columbia University. Bilbao is sought out by people from all over the world, asking her to design buildings, churches, houses, stores, hotels, etc. Her style is unique, and that’s why many people love her work.

Well, Trump, it seems to me that all of these people I just mentioned, are some of the best that Mexico sends to America.
