Introducing The Next Generation Of Leaders And Thinkers

The Refusal to Accept Trump’s Presidency Is Not A ‘Millennial Issue’

It’s all been said before: Millennials are the new “me generation.” Millennials want a trophy for showing up. We want everything handed to us. We have issues with authority. We’re lazy. We’re entitled. We’re a generation of narcissists.  Growing up, we were told we can do anything and be anything we want. Now that we’re older, we still have a little too much faith in that idea.

Apparently, according to Reverend Franklin Graham, who led the prayer service at the inauguration, it’s all true. On Reverend Graham’s NBC News interview after the inauguration, he was asked about the protesters and segment of the popular who feel uncomfortable and afraid.  He explained “There’s a segment of this country, no question, that is very unhappy they lost,” He then goes on to say, “and one of the problems we have today with the millennials: everybody gets a trophy. You play soccer, even the losers get trophy’s and people are not used to losing.”

There are many people that are adamant in believing that Millennials are the only cause of the unnecessary divisiveness over the election. We just can’t get over it. We can’t accept the loss. We deserve to win just because we think so. In 4 years, we can have our shot again. For now, it’s our civic duty to come together as a country and support our new president? Yeah, Right.

And while it may be true that a lot of Millenials are upset over the election results, has anyone ever thought to consider that we have every right to be so angry?

The truth is the issue doesn’t pertain to only millennials. It’s an issue that exists in every demographic, and every group that Trump’s presidency insults. The issue is Trump’s platform and how so many Americans ate it up enough for him to be elected president. The issue is the current president of the United States and the insulting, offensive comments and beliefs he stands for. You wouldn’t be wrong to say millennials are the most accepting and progressive generation. But you shouldn’t expect us to accept a president that has stampeded on our beliefs and many our rights to even exist.

At the end of the day, if any or all the stereotypes about millennials are correct, if millennials are true narcissists, lazy and believe that they deserve everything,  I can accept that. I’d rather stand behind them than any president who too often has been described as racist, sexist, misogynist, ableist and homophobic.

Still, this isn’t a millennial issue, it’s a people’s issue. So if you decide whether or not to resist or protest the new president, be confident in the fact that you are right to take your stance. A president is supposed to represent the people, not just some people.
