Introducing The Next Generation Of Leaders And Thinkers

The House Votes to Allow People with Mental Illnesses to Purchase Guns

In two weeks of Donald Trump’s presidency, Republicans have already done some frightening things such as approving the North Dakota and Keystone Pipelines, allowed coal mines to dump toxic waste into rivers, banned Muslims, and deteriorated our alliances with France, Australia, Estonia, Ukraine, Lithuania and many other countries. The House voted 235-180 to allow people with mental illnesses to purchase guns on February 2, 2017. But by allowing people with a mental illness jeopardizes the safety of the tens of millions of students, millions of daily shoppers, millions of movie fanatics, concert goers, and my point is basically, a lot of people. Mass shootings have become extremely common in the United States, and majority of the time, the shooters are labeled as “mentally ill”.

Mentally ill people should NOT have guns.

Yes, not every mentally ill person is capable of conducting a mass shooting, but according to an analysis conducted by the Central Florida Intelligence Exchange (CFIX) Conservatives claim that only 20% of mass shootings in the United States have occurred due to mass shootings  but according to research, 79% of mass shootings since 2011 in the United States, the shooter had a history of some sort of mental illness.   Whether it’s 20% or 79%, there is evidence that mental illness CAN cause mass shootings, and Republicans are gambling with the 326 million lives, they’re supposed to be in charge of.

Not all people who have a mental illness are capable of being a mass shooter, but it’s extremely hypocritical for Republicans, who blame every mass shooting in the United States on mental illness, to suddenly flip the switch and allow easy gun access for mentally ill individuals.

To name a small fraction of the actual amount, Mentally ill shooters have killed 9 African Americans at a church in Charleston, SC, 27 innocent children at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, CT, 11 university students in Oakland and Santa Monica, CA, 12 movie watchers in Aurora, CO, how can Republicans expect us to feel safe during our daily lives? Are we not allowed to go to church, go to school anymore, watch a movie, or eat out at a restaurant without having to worry about our safety anymore? Guns are NOT toys, 326 million people are not an experiment, and I for one would NOT like to have my safety jeopardized and my life gambled with.
