Domestic Violence Will Continue To Kill As Long As People Defend Abusers Like Chris Brown

Chris Brown has once again been found to be abusive and controlling in a relationship. TMZ reports that a judge has ordered him to stay away from his ex-girlfriend Karrueche Tran after he allegedly threatened to kill her saying he was prepared to “take her out”. TMZ reports that in a sworn statement to the judge, Karrueche claimed Chris Brown told a “few people that he was going to kill me” if she didn’t get back together with him. According to the report, Karrueche has also said that Brown threatened to hurt her friends, and several years ago he even punched her twice in the stomach. They have now been broken up since 2015, but Chris continues to stalk her both online and in the real world.

Karrueche filed the restraining order because she believes that Chris Brown is dangerous and poses a threat to her life. This isn’t the first time that Chris Brown has been found to be abusive. In 2009 he brutally beat Rihanna for which he got a six-year felony probation that was ended in March of 2015.

The restraining order requires Chris Brown to stay 100 yards away from Karrueche, her mother and her brother. Karrueche isn’ overreacting, in a video posted this month on Chris Brown’s Instagram page, he says, “Ladies, y’all be complaining about n—as being, like, stalkers and in love with y’all, kinda crazy and s–t and you get tired of them. Well, guess what? I’m one of them n—as! If I love you, bitch, ain’t nobody gonna have you. I’m gonna make you miserable. I’m gonna chase that n—a out. I’m gonna chase your ass around,” This video displays controlling and abusive behavior.

The people defending him make him feel like what he is doing is justified. As long as he feels like what he is doing is right, he will continue to abuse Tran. Who has evidently felt threatened by his refusal to let her safely live her life.

People are normalizing his behavior by laughing about it and creating memes. I don’t think people grasp just how serious this is.

Domestic violence isn’t rare at all.  About 4,000 women die each year due to domestic violence, and of the total domestic violence homicides, about 75% of the victims were killed as they attempted to leave the relationship or after the relationship had ended. One out of every three women will be abused at some point in her life. So even though domestic violence is common and very real, people continue to participate in the culture of victim blaming. Many of Chris Brown’s fans are defending him and treating this as a joke. But this isn’t a joke; this is a woman’s life being endangered by someone who has shown he is abusive both mentally and physically. Because of Chris Brown, Karrueche Tran is not allowed to live her life without fearing for it.

People will continue to create meme’s and laugh at Tran’s situation, but this is real life. People get killed every day by current partners and exes all over the world. Domestic violence is a serious issue that shouldn’t be the topic of memes and jokes. Getting out of an abusive relationship is hard so Tran and people in similar situations to her should be supported and helped, not mocked. To get a restraining order, you need a lot of proof, so this really is a serious situation. Karrueche shouldn’t be ridiculed for wanting to protect herself and her family; she should be respected and supported.
