Welcome to Trump’s America where you can get shot for absolutely no substantial reason. On February 22, 2017, Srinivas Kuchibhotla was murdered at Austins Bar and Grille by Adam Purinton who allegedly pulled out a gun, yelled, “get out of my country” and shot him. Another man, Alok Masadani, of Indian descent was also injured during the shooting. Purinton allegedly fled the murder scene and was found 90 miles away at an Applebee’s and was charged with 2 counts of attempted first-degree murder.
“What are they going to do to stop this hate crime?” Sunayana Dumala asked during an emotional news conference in the town of Olathe, where two days earlier, her husband and two others were shot under the mistaken belief that some of them were Middle Eastern.
Kuchibhotla had an extremely bright and successful future ahead. He had already received a master’s degree from the University of Texas after immigrating from India. He worked in the aviation systems division at GPS-navigation maker Garmin, which has a facility in Olathe.
Kuchibhotla’s family set up a GoFundMe fundraiser to cover expenses, including transporting his body to India, where his widow plans to go to the funeral. She told reporters she does indeed want to come back to the US, where she also graduated college, and continue the life and dream she had with her husband. But Kuchibhotla’s death only increased the doubts and questions she had shared with him when he was alive.
“Do we belong?” she asked.
The American Declaration of Independence allows for people of ALL GENDERS, RACE, AND SEXUALITIES, to have Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. Srinivas Kuchitbhola and his wife, Dumala have had all of those taken away from them, which shows how backwards our country is going. I myself am of Indian descent and I find this murder extremely despicable. I have a sister, obviously of Indian descent, I have family friends who live in the US that are of Indian descent, I have a cousins of Indian descent who have already graduated from college and are working in some of the top companies in the country, I have a cousin studying in the US directly from India, and another cousin who soon plans on attending college in the US. How are WE supposed to feel safe after it’s proven that our people can get shot just for having darker skin? How are WE supposed to excel in a country that guarantees Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness for all? Indians have started over 14 billion dollar companies in the United States, that have provided thousands of jobs and continue to keep our unemployment rate at an all-time low. Without these companies, we would be losing thousands of jobs, clean energy, data analytics for large companies, infrastructure and much more. IMMIGRANTS Make America Great, and no soggy, misogynistic, anti-immigrant, cheeto of a president can change that. Immigrants are the reason the United States of America was great before January 2oth, 2017, and we will all continue to fight for our rights and equality.
