Introducing The Next Generation Of Leaders And Thinkers

#FreeTheNipple Needs to Stop Being Fatphobic and Only for Cis White Women

Body shaming is never okay, for any reason. It’s unnecessary, cruel, and can totally undermine a person’s sense of self worth. Society has specific perimeters for how people are supposed to have “attractive” boobs, even though they’re just sacks of fat, usually used to feed babies. #freethenipple was started to let people take back their bodies, going topless, or simply not wearing a constricting bra. Breasts aren’t a sexual organ, but Western society sexualizes them rampantly.

While #freethenipple started out as something positive, it quickly became only accessible to skinny white cis women, refusing to give space to anyone that’s not white, is fat, or not a cis woman.

With #freethenipple, it’s empowering people to be topless, or simply bra-less, only if they fit the social perimeters of “attractive breasts”. If you’re above a DD, your boobs are suddenly “unattractive” or “too sexual”. People should be allowed to do whatever they want with their boobs, and nothing about that gives anyone any right to judge. Nothing about size of breasts makes them sexual. The Western cultural obsession with breasts is weird, and lots of other cultures around the world do not view breasts as sexual objects.

There are many reasons that person with large boobs would choose not to wear a bra, including these, and many more;

  1. They couldn’t find one. If you’re living in an area that doesn’t sell bra’s any bigger than a 38DDD, which are a lot of places. You’re basically out of luck. If you live in a rural location, or a small town, you don’t have the access, or the ability to get a bra.
  2. They have one, but it doesn’t fit. Because it’s so hard to find a bra when you’re over a DDD, lots of people settle on wearing one that doesn’t fit. If it doesn’t fit, it can damage your back, and cause lots of pain in your neck and shoulders, and maybe they don’t want to wear it for this reason.
  3. They have severe back pain. Just one of the various negative problems with having huge boobs are the fact that they can cause lasting back and neck damage. Wearing a bra can inflame the pain, and sometimes it’s better to just avoid prolonging the pain, and avoiding a bra.
  4. It’s really hot and uncomfortable. They’re hot. They’re itchy. They’re sweaty. Especially if they don’t fit right.
  5. Maybe they just didn’t want to, and that’s totally fine too. Maybe they wanted to give their boobs a break, and let them be free for a while. If you don’t like it, don’t look and mind your business. It’s not hurting you. If you want to wear a bra, wear one. There is no law that says that someone has to wear a bra under their clothes while they’re out living their life.

Stop thinking that fat bodies are somehow less worthy than thin bodies. If you don’t have a problem with Kendall Jenner walking around with no bra on, and saying it’s “strong” and “empowering” when she does it, but turn around and say that the lady with G sized boobs is “gross” and “a slob”, you need to sit down and think about the internalized fat phobia you’ve got going on, and ask yourself why you value boobs only until a certain size.

People that have large/huge boobs also deserve to participate in #freethenipple. People that aren’t cis women also deserve space to participate in this space. People that aren’t white women deserve space in this community as well, and they’re not more sexual than anyone else. If you’re sexualizing bodies because they’re not white, you’re a racist. All boobs are great, and all people should be able to be comfortable and do whatever they want with them.
