Introducing The Next Generation Of Leaders And Thinkers

4 Reasons That “Black Girls Rock!” Is Powerful

Written by Autumn Canty

Tuesday night, “Black Girls Rock’ aired on BET(Black Entertainment). This award show is greatly devalued, mostly advertised by social media accounts. “Black Girls Rock” began in 2006, awarding talented, black women and young girls that make a difference in our community. It is a very inspiring event because women like Gladys Knight and Rihanna share their stories. Of course, many white people view the show as “racist” and “demeaning to their culture”, without even doing their own research. The following reasons will disprove those opinions.

1. It gives black women the ability to give powerful advice and inspire young black women worldwide.

In the media, black women are not celebrated in society as much as other races. This allows women all over the world to hear a message of strength and courage from a black woman that they admire. What better way to hear advice than from your favorite celebrity?

2. This event gives black women a platform to advertise their businesses, organizations, etc.
Most black women are always searching for products that can compliment our skin tones, build stronger hair, etc. This allows black businesses to get their business out there and assist black women that need their assistance.

3. “Black Girl Rock” celebrates black women, as the media does the opposite.
The media isn’t very encouraging when it comes to celebrating women that don’t have eurocentric features. Beverly Bond, the founder, allows legends and ordinary black women to be given a positive light on television.

4. It provides other opportunities and events for young black girls.
Besides “Black Girls Rock”, there are many other events such as “Black Girls Lead”, “Black Girls Tech” and “Black Girls Rock: Africa”. These expose black girls to a wide range of opportunities that can help them discover job opportunities and mentors.

In conclusion, “Black Girls Rock”, gives black women confidence. It helps them find mentors and great role models to follow. After watching “Black Girls Rock”, it gave me the confidence to inspire other people to go after great opportunities. Even though I am young, I found that it is never too early to start inspiring the people around you to make a change.
