You’ve seen Affinity’s t-shirt campaign “Listen to the kids”, maybe you’ve even bought one of the shirts yourself. “Listen to the kids” is a slogan aiming to get the message across that kids/teenagers are capable of holding intellectual conversations about typical “adult” things, such as politics, that are factual and correct. Recently, President Obama has revealed an eye-opening moment where he decided to “listen to the kids” on the topic of gay marriage, which eventually lead to its legalization in 2015.
President Obama wasn’t in favor of legalizing same sex marriage until 2012 (just 4 years ago). Before that time, he was in support of same sex couples having civil unions instead of marriages. Like many other law officials, President Obama simply didn’t see a valid reason that marriage was a necessity for same sex couples as long as they had the same rights under law as heterosexual couples did. President Obama revealed that it was his own children, Sasha and Malia, that brought him to understand the difference between allowing gay couples to marry versus allowing them to have civil unions.
If listening to the kids can lead to the legalization of gay marriage, just think of all the other possibilities that could be brought about if adults weren’t so naive as to think that they are smarter than the youth. There are thousands of bright, young minds just waiting for their ideas to be heard. The youth are innovative, knowledgeable, and yes some of us are even politically correct. The youth are the future. This is why it is ever so important to invest in our youth’s education (free public college), health (better sex ed and supporting women’s rights), and their voices (believing them in the eyes of the law). If even President Obama can listen to the kids, than you certainly can too.
