“Be Happy” is a short film that was recently released by Demetrius Harmon, a well-known social media star. The film was directed by Caleon Fox, and included guest appearances by Caleb Glass (a viner), Nathan Zed (a youtuber), Victor Pope Jr (a viner and comedian), and Caleon Fox.

depressionVictor Pope Jr. starred in the short as Depression. For those who are unaware,  the definition of depression, as told by Merriam-Webster dictionary, is a serious medical condition in which a person feels very sad, hopeless, and unimportant and often is unable to live in a normal way. In the short, Depression tells Meech things that are, well, depressing. Things like “there is no happiness” or “you can’t get rid of me,” (I know the second one doesn’t sound very depressing on its own, but when you put it into context, it does sound quite depressing. Depression always lingers over Meech; it manages to creep in every time Meech is with Happiness (Caleon Fox). In the end, Meech realizes that Happiness is a part of everything he had associated with Depression, such as overdosing and razor blades.

anxietyCaleb Glass starred in the film as Anxiety. Anxiety is fear or nervousness about what might happen. Anxiety is basically freaking out. He has 99 problems and every last one of them is always on his mind and preventing him from doing all the things he wants to do.

happinessHappiness is played by Caleon Fox.  When happiness appears in the film, he isn’t exactly welcomed by Depression and Anxiety, even though he showed up with pizza (unbelievable, right?). Depression questions where happiness was when Meech attempted to end his life, and at the end of the film, Meech finally understands that Happiness arriving was what prevented him from doing so.

friendNathan Zed plays Meech’s not-so-understanding father. He believes that mental illness is for white people and that all you need to do to cure depression is to “tell it to leave and let happiness come in”, which obviously isn’t true. In an attempt to help his son he offers Meech some milk, even though he’s lactose intolerant.

meechAnd last, but not least, we have Demetrius Harmon aka Meech. A young man battling depression and anxiety, Meech brings us along on his pursuit of happiness [ (; ]. He shares his experiences with depression, anxiety, happiness, and even a peek society’s point of view on mental illnesses.

Overall, this short film is one like no other, including occasional comedic relief all while promoting an important message. He’s even gone as far as to release a censored version for those who might want to show the short to a younger audience. Congratulations to everyone who was a part of this project, y’all did that!
