Remember the last time you talked about real life in your school? Oh right, that was never! School doesn’t teach about feminism, racism, LGBT+ rights, sexual education, taxes, basically anything you actually need to know in real life. But we all know the powerhouse of a cell is the mitochondria. Why don’t they teach us things that are going to be beneficial to us? Do they want us to fail? Who gets to decide what we learn and won’t we don’t learn in school?
Adults always tell me they never use anything they learned in high school. So then why do we learn it? If you want to enter in the field of science or engineering or math then the things you learn in school are vital to you. But what about art and music students? Everyday you hear about all these schools cutting art and music classes because they “aren’t important.” How come when a student isn’t skilled in art and music “it’s ok music and art just aren’t your thing”, but when your not skilled in science and math your whole future is on the line. STEM subjects are outstanding and it’s mind-blowing to know how things in life function. But art and music is just as mind-blowing; maybe even more. Exciting would be an understatement in describing what art and music they can create in their own mind.
Almost a year ago I got a Twitter account, and my eyes were opened to the whole world around me. I live in a sheltered, conservative neighborhood where no one talks of political issues, and the ones who do are privileged males who have a biased point of view. I saw that racism is extremely still very alive and we still need to fight for women’s and LGBT+ rights. I was introduced to intersectional feminism which means racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, etc. are interconnected and cannot be examined separately from one another. In laymen’s terms, it means equality for anyone and everyone. If not for Twitter I would have never learned of all the world issues we have today and in the past. I wouldn’t have become a writer for Affinity Magazine! I have been more educated through Twitter than in school.
Why are schools keeping all this knowledge from us? Are they scared that everyone has the same right to learn and be educated? Are they scared that for once students might treat their neighbor with respect? If basic respect isn’t being taught in school what are we going to do in real life? We will be just like the baby boomers and nothing will change in our society. Get on Twitter. You will find people who have incredible stories, and you’ll get to see life from another point of view. There’s a whole world out there. Learn from it. Learn from the mistakes, and don’t repeat history.
