What To Look For At Tonight’s Debate

Tonight brings us the first Republican vs. Democrat, head-to-head presidential debate of this election cycle, and the hype couldn’t be bigger. Trump (the racist, white supremacist cheeto) squared up against Hillary (the chronic liar and potential first female president)? Sounds like the premiere of my new favorite reality TV show. So far, this election has brought up a myriad of issues that worry the general American public. But which ones should we be looking for, especially, at tonight’s debate? Here’s a short, easy list of some of the things I’m hoping to see and hear tonight.

  1. Race Relations: How can they not bring this up? With the recent unprovoked murder of Terence Crutcher, there has to be some sort of question about police brutality or Black Lives Matter. I’d love to see both candidates herald the Black Lives Matter movement, but let’s be serious…
  2. Immigration: “Build the wall!” I’m interested to see how Trump goes about discussing his immigration platform while explaining his wall and his plan to pay for it. Hopefully Clinton counters the ridiculousness with some solid and feasible plans about how to make immigration a smoother process and how to simplify the path to citizenship.
  3. Jobs: There is no doubt that America desperately needs exponential growth in jobs to counter increasing poverty rates. Obviously, liberals and conservatives have nearly polar opposite views when it comes to how to handle economic growth (liberals believe in more government interaction while conservatives believe in little as possible interaction). I assume both candidates will flee to their party’s respective idealism, but I hope some specific plans are discussed.
  4. The Interaction: This election is interesting in that the candidates have already interacted with each other directly and not particularly positively. Twitter has allowed Clinton and Trump (or their staff, rather) to fight over ideas via social media. I look forward to seeing how this carries over into the real life debate.
  5. Explanation of Policies: Donald Trump is notorious for not really explaining how he is going to implement his policies on the aforementioned topics and more. Hopefully Trump finally goes in-depth about how he is going to do what he says he wants to do. How hard can it be, right?

Hopefully watching the most-likely-cringeworthy debate tonight will be a little easier after reading my short breakdown of important topics. Tonight should be interesting… hopefully it lives up to the hype.
