A tape containing Donald Trump’s views on women and how his fame has affected these views was recently uncovered, and boy is this one a gem. I’m pretty sure Donald Trump just admitted to sex crimes. In a brutally honest tape, Trump is recorded saying that because of his newfound fame, he is essentially allowed to grope women. “You can do anything,” Trump says, “You can grab them by the p*ssy.” Among these disgustingly sexist comments, Trump also mentions hitting on married women. Why on earth would he think that this type of sexual assault is anywhere near okay? Well because he’s famous- that’s why. Apparently, as long as you’re famous, you can do whatever you’d like to women, well, at least according to the Republican Presidential Nominee.
“When you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything … Grab them by the p*ssy. You can do anything.”
These types of comments are horrifying no matter whose mouth they came out of. If a random man at the grocery store uttered anything near what Trump said, I would be beyond disgusted. But when these words come from someone who could potentially be the leader of the country in which I live in, that’s something else completely. This type of behavior is beyond inappropriate for someone who has a very real possibility of being our new President. When people with this much political power condone acts like groping and assault, it reiterates the stigma that women are nothing but objects and fuels the rape culture in this country. The worse part is, Trump’s words will be welcomed into the minds of those who already agree with his mentality, fortifying these misogynistic thoughts. America already has an issue with rape and sexual assault, and rapists not being held accountable for their actions. The last thing we need is prominent political figure dehumanizing women even more.
This is not Donald Trump’s first run-in with the idea of sexism. In the past, he has inappropriately referenced a woman’s menstrual periods and more recently, has shamed a former beauty queen for putting on weight. There is also the multiple references to his running mate’s gender, alluding that because Hilary Clinton is a woman, she is less cut out for the job. The truth is, he can do all of the apologizing he wants, but Trump’s actions show a consistent pattern of misogyny. Clearly, Donald Trump does not see an equal when he looks at women. He does not see a lawyer or teacher or a future president, he sees a piece of meat who he believes is open to taking advantage of.
This audio tape does not leave any room for Trump to hide. The only thing he can really do is to own up to his rude sexist remarks because there’s no denying that he said things he did- the tapes don’t lie. There’s no way around it, his words are offensive and should not be encouraged. The deeper problem with Trump’s words is that it puts any women that in Trump’s vicinity on edge. Because the truth is that every woman will not merely let you touch them because you are a “star”. Every woman does not want your hands anywhere near their intimate parts. And when you have the mentality that every woman does want you, well that’s what leads to rape, my friends. And when you have this toxic mentality in someone with so much authority already, that’s where a serious issue lies. What happens to all the women in the White House if Trump becomes President? To every woman who must live under the leadership of someone that views them as an object? To every young girl who must listen to these sexist remarks spew out of his mouth, fed the lie that their consent does not matter. Would you really feel safe under the authority of someone who views you as someone to take advantage of, because I sure as hell wouldn’t.
