Unfriendly reminder: college deadlines are around the corner. Just in case you aren’t stressed enough about meeting deadlines, you’re about to add more college applications to your list: apps to women’s colleges.
Why aren’t you applying to one? Answers range from intimidation to being afraid of girl culture, but I’m here to tell you that you probably have more reasons than not to apply to one.
1. Diverse Academics
Don’t know exactly what you want to be yet? Don’t worry! Lucky for you, women’s reputations for multi-tasking come in handy yet again by enforcing just about every passion possible in a structured education. I encourage you to check any women’s college website and take a look at their programs, clubs, and majors. The student body of all of these schools take it to heart to bring all voices and interests to the desks of the deans to make sure you can do what you want and when you want it. Do you like modern literature, 1920s France History and computer science? Have no fear. Odds are, so do 27 other girls in your dorm and 300 women before you, so if you can think it, there’s probably a major for it.
2. “Sexism, be gone.” –Professors
Friendly reminder that this is an all women’s college. You will be pushed out of your academic comfort zone because unlike some educations, women can do everything and, as far as women’s college’s staff are concerned, women WILL do everything. These schools mean business, people! These professors are cool enough to work in an all-girl, feminist-inclined atmosphere, so they are obviously some of the greatest and most motivating teachers around. They won’t call James from your economics class over you because they don’t teach James; they choose to teach you.
3. Sista-Sista
Imagine a world where you can go to class in your sheep PJ-pants, a Vampire Diaries T-shirt and mascara from the night before. Chances are that you will unintentionally twin with a girl in your 8 a.m, only she’s more of a Doctor Who fan than V.D, but she still thinks your outfit is cool. That’s the socially relaxed nature of an all-girls college. That time of the month? Ask out-loud. No holding back here because everyone goes with it. Had a rough time adjusting to your boisterous male boss? Relatable to every girl there. The sisterhood of these schools will never leave you and the comfort is no match anywhere else.
4. Alumni Advantages
Let’s just point out the elephant in the room one more time: Hillary Clinton. She was chosen as the student body’s commencement speaker at Wellesley College and it’s safe to say that she’s a pretty smart woman. She’s smart, (even Donald Trump had to admit she’s tough as leather) which is not a shock coming from an all women’s college as alumni include Katherine Hepburn, Zora Lee Hurston, and Lauren Graham. I have been to a couple all girl schools and let me just say that the alumni connections are no joke here. If you need an internship, ask. If you need a reference, ask. These women are not only devoted to improving themselves but helping out every girl that’s looking to take on the field with them.
5. Never-ending Motivation
Your every-day routine is going to consist of hanging out with some of the most motivated girls you can find. They’re passionate about work, internships, reading, and learning. In college, I don’t know what else you could look for in friends. They’re going to push and motivate you like you won’t believe.
Give it a shot, take a tour. You will be surprised just how beautiful a sisterhood like an all-girl college can be and, trust me, this supplement won’t be a hard one.
