Thanksgiving is this week, and you can do more than just argue with your horrible relatives. Here are some charities you can donate to that’ll really put your money where your mouth is, one for each of the awful people you happen to be related to.
- For your relative(s) who think white people own America: The Standing Rock Protest Camp
Also known as the Sacred Stone Camp, this is the area where the #NoDAPL protestors are spending their time. They are in dire need of resources, especially after their most recent police clash. Donations of any amount are welcome and needed.
- For your relative(s) who still says the N-word: The ACLU
The American Civil Liberties Union needs our help now more than ever, as the Trump presidency approaches. This organization is essential to securing the civil liberties of numerous communities across America who are discriminated against by our Justice department. Help secure their legal rights by giving a one-time or monthly donation.
- For your relative(s) who shares all those sexist memes on Facebook: Planned Parenthood
Planned Parenthood is more than just an abortion clinic. This organization provides healthcare to disadvantaged women across the country, by giving them access to trained medical professionals and resources they wouldn’t otherwise be able to obtain. Donations as small as $5 are accepted.
- For your relative(s) who says gay people are a sin: The Trevor Project
This organization is a non-profit that relies entirely on donations for their mission to protect LGBTQ+ youth. Not only do they provide education and resources, but they also have a 24/7 suicide prevention hotline. Beyond donations, they also provide helpful resources if you want to fundraise more for their cause. Bring a pamphlet to the dinner table!
- For your relative(s) who thinks all refugees are terrorists: International Rescue Committee
The IRC focuses on assisting refugees and their families every step of the way. They help provide refugees with healthcare, safe places to live, schools, job training, clean water, and numerous other valuable resources. Currently, settling refugees safely in America is one of their crises goals, and a small donation can help assist them in this effort.
- For your relatives who are actually decent people: Ask them to donate too!
The more the merrier! If you have some like-minded people in your family, reach out to them. Maybe you can shoot them a text or an email, or maybe just slip them covert notes under the dinner table. Either way, you can spread the word about charities in need.
For many, Thanksgiving is a holiday to dread. Being around bigoted family members can be draining, scary and depressing. But nothing warms the heart more during the holidays than pissing off your horrible relatives by giving back to those in need. This Thanksgiving, whether you’re yelling at your cousin who voted for Trump or trying to explain to your grandma that immigrants aren’t here to steal our jobs, you can rest east knowing that your donations are going to good use, making sure that people like your relatives don’t get their way. Happy Thanksgiving!
