It’s been over a year since the sorry excuse for a human being aka 22 year old white supremacist Dylan Roof killed 9 precious souls worshipping at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina. This was a massacre that shattered the hearts of Black America. There was plenty of outrage over the lenient treatment that Roof received at the hands of the police (they even bought him Burger King after he was arrested), and this incident was one of the catalysts that reignited the debate over gun control. It also served to highlight the disparity in the way that white people and black people (given the murder of black Freddie Gray by the police just months prior) were treated by the police.
Today, Roof was found guilty of all 33 counts of federal charges he was accused of. This comes as no surprise because Roof admitted to planning this racially motivated terrorist attack. CNN made a great point about Roof being found guilty the trial that happened today. They mentioned the fact that this wasn’t a trial to see if he was guilty or not because he already confessed to committing this atrocity; it was about the jury being exposed to the facts in order for them to figure out of he is worthy of the death penalty or not.
The same jury that found Roof guilty will meet again on January 3rd 2017 to decide his punishment. Just as he did during his guilt hearing, Roof has asked to represent himself in his January 3rd hearing for his sentencing. Many people have speculated why he has chosen to represent himself, but given the gravity of his charges, he has the choice between two punishments: life without parole or the death penalty. Everyone has their own opinions on which punishment he deserves, and come January 3rd we will all be glued to our TV screens praying that this white terrorist gets the punishment he deserves
