If you live somewhere cold, you’ll know the frozen agony of the cold weather (or maybe even Polar Vortex) we’re experiencing. It’s tolerable, as long as you’re indoors with the heat. However, those who are homeless will struggle through the cold. Last year, 212 homeless people in New York City died due to extreme cold. Here’s what you can do to help this winter:
Seek out local shelters. You can call or email local shelters and inquire about volunteering. Not sure where your local shelters are? Use this website dedicated to finding shelters near you.
Donate clothing! Buy, recycle, or make coats, hats, scarves, blankets, sheets, or any other cold-weather gear. Anything helps!
Participate in local food banks. There are quite a few options for this one. There are some national banks like Feeding America, as well as local small banks or food banks run by churches. Find whichever works best for you and donate time and/or money to help those in need.
Make monetary donations! Above all else, it’s essential to note that, unfortunately, services that help the homeless aren’t free. Donate your own money if you can, have people donate in your honor (maybe as a holiday or birthday gift), and start fundraisers for your local services.
This winter, don’t take the privilege of a roof under your head for granted. Help those in need.
