In class, we debated the sexism that exists in publicity today. Boys said it was necessary, so that people would talk about the brands. On the other hand, girls think that marketing could think of other ways to promote their products without using stereotypes. One guy says, “Girls are always complaining about the smallest of things. They’re just advertisements, it’s not that serious”. All the guys agree.
It’s not just an advertisement. It’s not about complaining. It’s not because we think girls suffer the most. We all have to struggle because society wants us to look and act a certain way. Boys like football, but girls don’t. Girls can wear makeup, but it’s strange for a guy to do it. We have to stop thinking this, the world has changed, we should move forward.
Women don’t complain just because we appear in an ad acting girly. Women live through injustices, like being paid less for the same work. Every day, women fight for their rights as they raise their family. Nowadays, a lot of women, also men, are single mothers and fathers and have to work every day to pay the bills and give their families what they need. Women will not be silent until they live in a world where everybody is being treated equality, live in peace and have the same opportunities.
I live in a country where women are starting to have opportunities. But the generation my county has raised still have a long way to go. Some days ago, I argued with a boy in my class because he doesn’t think it’s bad to pay women less than men. I tried to tell him why he was wrong, how it wasn’t helping women develop professionally, but he just didn’t listen to me. When I tried to show the guys why I want change, why I want justice, they thought I was attacking them. How can there be change if we can’t debate without someone feeling attacked?
The world won’t change because some (many) people still believe there is nothing wrong. On Jan. 21,, the day of the women’s march, show the world why we deserve these things. Many women were dismayed or even horrified that America chose Trump — an alleged sexual predator whose policies could be a huge setback for women’s health and rights — over Clinton, a highly qualified public servant who could have been America’s first woman president. Women are powerful themselves, but unless men and women fight together, for the same reason, we won’t change anything.
