“You know he’s dead, right?” my ignorant father asks as I declare my love for Corey Ian Haim. Corey Haim was an actor who was very popular in the 1980’s but unfortunately lost his life due to Pneumonia in 2010. If I’m able to recognize Corey Haim’s voice before he even begins to speak what makes my father question whether or not I’m aware that he’s dead? It’s pure ignorance and ignorance is something those who stan someone who isn’t alive anymore have to deal with constantly.
Though it may startle people at first, a “dead celebrity” has such a big impact on me. I’m not the only one who is greatly impacted by a celebrity they’ve never met and never will, many people stan dead celebrities and there’s nothing wrong with it. When you find out someone’s a big fan of a dead celebrity, don’t choose to be ignorant and ask a question about their death, choose to be supportive of it. You can be supportive in several ways… Give them a hug, tell them their idol would be so appreciative of all the support they’re giving, be considerate towards the whole situation.Speaking from personal experience, although Corey Haim brings me so much joy in my heart and makes me smile when smiling is the hardest thing to do, it still breaks my heart greatly that he’s not alive anymore. I would do anything just to be in his presence for the smallest second.
It’s okay to mourn the death of a celebrity. Some of us spend more time with this celebrity than our so called friends. Sometimes this celebrity is the only friend we have. We spend hours watching their movies, listening to their music, watching them being interviewed, they make up a big part of our lives. The work that these celebrities put out, whether it be a movie or a song, helps us get through our hardest times. Corey Haim has helped me deal with my anxiety with his movies, it’s the only thing that keeps me calm when my anxiety’s acting up. In addition to helping me out with my anxiety, his movie “License To Drive” helped me get through my Freshman year of high school, the year where I had absolutely no friends.
Everyone has different struggles and a different story to tell, these celebrities are our safe haven so please don’t judge us.
At the end of the day, these celebrities are much more than actors, singers, etc. to us. They’re our idols, our role models, our world. There’s no need to constantly bring up the fact that they’re dead, it’s unnecessary because we’re completely aware of it. Their physical body might be gone from this earth but their spirit is surely alive through the constat love and support we show them. Be proud of who you love and never change that for anyone!
