I think I speak for most people when I say, it was humorous when reality tv star, Donald Trump announced that he was running for President of the United States. Then he start gaining support by spewing hate and making stupid promises like, “I’ll build a wall and make Mexico pay for it!” That was funny at the time too, because none of us truly thought he would do it, but now here we are. Trump is the president and he’s attempting to build a wall across the border of the U.S. and Mexico. There are so many reasons why this is a bad idea, and I’m sure you know of them, but here’s even more.
First of all, Mexico is currently our third largest goods trading partner with 531 billion in total goods trade during 2015. Millions of Americans go to work every day to work in trade with Mexico. So building this wall will actually be costing a lot of American citizen’s their job, while also costing us one of out largest trading partners. Do you know what we get from Mexico? Allow me to enlighten you. We receive vehicles, electrical machinery, mineral fuels, and optical and medical instruments. We also get a lot of agricultural products from Mexico, actually when it comes t agricultural products alone, Mexico is our second largest trading partner. Fresh vegetables, fruits, beer, and processed fruits and vegetables are just a few examples of what we receive from Mexico. So why on earth would Donald Trump think it’s a good idea to risk the friendship we have with Mexico? Mexico is also right underneath us. Personally, I don’t think it’s very smart for us to become enemies with a country that is so close to us, especially one that we depend on for good so much.
Now let’s discuss how he wants to pay for this wall. His administration has been making noise about last year 15 billion dollars was made off imports from Mexico, and raising import tax by 20% will raise just enough to pay for his precious wall. So, that means that us, American taxpayers will be the ones paying for this wall. Not Mexico. Us. This would do damage to both the American and Mexican economy, eventually resulting in a trade war.
Donald Trump has had so many idiotic ideas, and this wall is definitely one of them. Building this wall, is most definitely not worth all the trouble it will bring us and the Mexican people.
