Introducing The Next Generation Of Leaders And Thinkers

Why is Music Still Such A Male Dominated Industry?

“The music industry is a vicious business. It chews women up and spits them out again.”

The music industry is always been documented all around the globe, but one thing seems to be missing – the mistreating of women. With it feeling like the 1940s again due to women still having to protest for their basic rights, it seems like a losing battle against the rest of the world. But are women being treated the right way in the music industry?  Numerous women within the music industry stand out as pioneers of their genre, including icons such as Madonna and Lady Gaga. However, that doesn’t change how heavily dominated the music industry is by men.

Recently, edited images of festival line-ups with just the female acts have emerged across social media, most posters ending up with only one or two acts. It all began with before and after versions of the bill at this year’s Reading and Leeds festival. See below.

But it could be purely coincidence right? Or it could be the fact that the music industry is slightly bias.

Women all across the industry are constantly being compared to one another, Getting scolded for covering up too much or showing too much skin, there isn’t much movement of this stopping, with most leading newspapers and magazines publishing it, it’s all becoming a bit too ordinary.

Yet this is a subject people keep quiet about.  For example, Alicia Keys is one of many females to comment on this, describing to the Telegraph in how the industry has attempted to sexualize her image. “Everyone is going, “oh, that’s beautiful, that’s nice, why don’t you try and unbutton that shirt a little lower, pull that skirt a little higher, it’s really nice.” And you’re just trying to figure out how not to look like an idiot.”

Women are starting to feel pushed out of the industry, or don’t even want to start a career because of the abuse that comes with being a female musician, but with 61% of the music industry being male dominated, is this really the world we want to live in?
